While the world’s attention might be focussed on Qatar in a few weeks’ time, the World Cup came to Preston last week.
North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce members took to the pitch at UCLan Sports Arena and battled it out in the Chamber World Cup 5-A-Side football Tournament.
10 Lancashire based companies were keen to showcase their footballing talents and competed throughout the day to take home the sought-after accolade, ‘Chamber 5-a-side World Cup Winner’.
Across the day, companies from across the county, from a range of sectors, including Harrison Drury Solicitors, Hotter Shoes, McDade Roberts Accountants, McDonalds, Melling Performance Springs, Mersey Eco Grants, Virtue Technologies, Business Health Matters & Southplanks, battled it out to take home the trophy!
It was family-run business, Southplanks, that came out on top, winning a hotly contested final against Skelmersdale based Virtue Technologies.
Event sponsors, Business Health Matters, were there on the day not only to compete, but to showcase to competitors their offerings from their workplace health programme, including basic health checks.
Babs Murphy, CEO of the Chamber, said: “With the World Cup taking place thousand of miles away, we wanted to have a little spirit of the tournament right here in the city.
“The tournament’s purpose was to enable businesses to join for a day of team building, to boost morale and team spirit, whilst having the opportunity to connect with other like-minded businesses between games.
“The teams certainly showed their competitive spirit during the games, but the day was a huge success and I’d like to thank all teams for taking part. It’s a tournament we hope to put on again so start your training now!”
“The business community clearly has an appetite for this type of team building experience. We are now consulting with the teams with a view to adding this competition into our annual programme of events”.
