Several Chamber members have backed a national campaign by the British Chambers to bring back tax-free shopping for travellers coming back to the UK.
The BCC managed to secure over 500 leading businesses to sign a letter demanding the Chancellor scraps the tourist tax in order to give the economy a much-needed boost.
Spear-headed by hotelier Sir Rocco Forte, it is also backed by Heathrow Airport – which warned that the tourist tax is diverting sales from British tills to Europe.
It is hoped this campaign will see the Chancellor bring in new measures when he delivers the Budget this week.
Tax-free shopping for overseas tourists was scrapped by the then Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, back in 2021.
BCC director general Shevaun Haviland said that businesses are calling for a new international tax-free shopping policy for international tourists.
