Edge Hill University’s Department of Psychology is to offer support for small businesses, public sector organisation, and third-sector organisation through their new consultation service – the Behavioural Data Service. The service looks to research and utilisation of data for better business intelligence and growth.

Experts from Edge Hill University’s Department of Psychology are set to launch a new consultation service – The Behavioural Data Service. The service, aimed at SMEs, public sector, and third-sector organisations, will unlock potential by supporting the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. Businesses and organisations will be helped to grow through data-driven intelligence and data-backed decisions.

The Behavioural Data Service is positioned to support Research and Development (R&D) activities related to business planning for future economic growth, in 2025 and beyond. Figures published by the ONS in December 2024 show that in 2023, spending on R&D increased by 2.6% to £50 billion, with scientific research topping the charts. R&D is usually associated with large corporations, with SMEs and publicly funded organisations sometimes lacking the capabilities to conduct research effectively or the expertise to drive value from the data. This puts them at a disadvantage. This flexible consultation service can be tailored to meet the needs and budgets of businesses and organisations when they need it most.

Edge Hill University’s Behavioural Data Service team will positively impact businesses, improving business process management, contributing to strategy, or helping them gather the necessary data to develop new products and services. This will help align business goals and allocate resources, leading to future growth and a competitive edge.

To do this, they are looking to offer an in-depth experience, from designing to evaluating research data, which includes:
• Ethical data management
• Data insights
• Data analysis and interpretation
• Evaluation services
• Neuroimaging analysis
• Natural language processing

Professor Linda Kaye, Associate Head of the Department for Psychology (Knowledge Exchange and Marketing), said of the new service, “We are excited to share our expertise with businesses and organisations to bring about economic and societal impact.

Our new Behavioural Data Service is part of the wider range of business and industry services at Edge Hill University, such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), bespoke CPD, and access to our specialized facilities. We are committed to supporting businesses in all aspects of their work. We do this through understanding human behaviour, both individuals and organisations.”
