One of the reasons small businesses are not prepared for the new regulations is that they don’t think it will affect them, for example, because they don’t process or hold much data and thereby assume they are exempt. The important thing to remember is that every business will be affected. There is some unofficial guidance online suggesting that small businesses are exempt, but that is not the case. The EU legislation and the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) state that the new data protection measures apply to all businesses, with some limited exemptions for small businesses.
