Becky Toal, MD & Founder of Chamber member, Crowberry Consulting Ltd, has been awarded with an ‘Inspirational Woman in STEM’ honour, at the House of Lords Event.
The Inspirational Woman in STEM & Construction Awards took place at the House of Lords on Thursday 22nd June, London. The event was the cumulation following the Alison Rose Review of female entrepreneurship which highlighted that women entrepreneurs are underrepresented in most of the productive sectors of the UK economy. Female entrepreneurship could add a further £250bn to the UK economy. The Review recommends that encouraging young woman to study Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths i.e. STEM subjects is a key to increasing female-start up rates in these sectors.
The lack of visible role models in the STEM industry contributes to the low number of females taking up STEM related careers. The campaign and awards is an opportunity to identify inspirational female business owners in STEM and Construction, who can act as role models to the future generations. These are woman challenging the status quo in typically male dominated areas.
The awards were presented by Baroness Sandy Verma in conjunction with Jomas Associates, Becky Toal MD of Crowberry Consulting said “As a female entrepreneur with three science degrees I have pursued a career in environmental and sustainability management, which is largely male dominated.
“I have experienced many challenges over the last 20 years, however, awards and campaigns such as this one are vital to change the direction of the sector. I look forward to providing coaching/mentoring to one of the young STEM ambassadors to support them on their career journey and its fabulous to be recognised in the House of Lords along with many other inspirational women in STEM.”
